What you'll need

A few basics make measuring quick and accurate. Work in millimetres (mm) throughout for the best fit.

Measure everything in millimetres (mm) — it's the most accurate for cabinetry.

A friend or partner makes measuring walls and heights far easier and more reliable.

Sketch a floor plan and write down every measurement as you go — including windows, doors and appliances.

Step by step

Your kitchen measuring guide

Follow these steps and note every measurement on your floor plan. If in doubt, measure twice.

Sketch your floor plan

Draw the room on blank paper, marking all windows, doors, arches, structural elements and appliances.

Floor-to-ceiling height

Measure the full height, breaking tall walls into sections if that's easier to record.

Measure your windows

Note floor to the bottom of the window, the window height including architraves, and the top of the window to the ceiling — plus the window depth.

Measure the walls

Record wall lengths and heights wall-to-wall. For an existing space, add the thickness of tiles or splashbacks.

Doorways & architraves

Measure each doorway and architrave, and mark which way the door opens on your plan.

Map the plumbing

Under the sink, mark the hot and cold taps and the waste plumbing so we can plan around them.

Mark the power points

Show all current power points — and any future ones you'd like — on your plan.

Double-check everything

Measure twice if in doubt, keep everything in millimetres, and make sure it's all written down.
