How we make a bathroom bigger
There is more than one way to gain a metre. These are the approaches we use most often across Melbourne homes — often in combination.
Borrow From an Adjoining Room
Taking space from a hallway, linen press or robe. The cheapest way to gain floor area because the roof and slab stay untouched.
Push Out Under the Roofline
Extending into space already covered by the existing roof — a verandah, porch or under-eave return. No new roof structure needed.
Full Structural Extension
A new footprint with new slab, framing and roof. The biggest gain, and the option that needs permits and the longest lead time.
Combine Bathroom and Laundry
Merging two small wet rooms into one larger one. Plumbing is already in place, so it often delivers the best space-per-dollar in older homes.
Ensuite From a Spare Room
Converting a small bedroom or study into an ensuite. Adds real value, but drainage falls and waterproofing need careful planning.

Bathroom extension FAQs
Do I need a permit to extend my bathroom?
Usually yes if you are changing the building footprint or altering structure — that normally means a building permit through a registered surveyor. Plumbing must be done by a licensed plumber who issues a compliance certificate, and waterproofing must meet AS 3740. Scope and council requirements vary, so ask us to walk you through what your job needs.
How long will my bathroom be out of action?
For a reconfiguration without extending, plan on roughly two to three weeks on site. A structural extension runs longer once permits, framing and roofing are involved. A full bathroom renovation follows the same sequence. We give you a clear schedule with your fixed-price quote.
Are your benchtops affected by the engineered stone ban?
No. Since 1 July 2024, manufacturing and installing engineered (artificial) stone is banned across Australia for worker-safety reasons. We only supply compliant, silica-safe surfaces — natural stone, porcelain and sintered stone, timber and laminate — so your new benchtop is both beautiful and fully compliant.
Do you handle small bathrooms?
Yes. Small bathrooms are most of what we do. Often the fix is not extending at all — a wall-hung vanity, a sliding door and a clear-glass screen can buy back more usable space than a metre of floor area.
Can I buy just the vanity and benchtop?
Yes. We supply fully custom cabinetry as part of a managed extension, and bathroom vanities in standard and custom sizes if you’re fitting it yourself or working to a tighter budget — all at importer-direct prices. Many customers mix the two.
